Website Project Timeline
Have you ever thought about the nature of a schedule? What is it good for?
Well, the obvious answer is that it’s good for setting and remembering dates. But there’s another reason beyond this that is integral to completing a good project: seeing how your tasks fit in with your other team members’ tasks.
When we build a website, we are working together with you as a team. Your efforts are just as important – if not more important – than our own. After all, you are the subject matter expert of what this site will be about, and we are relying on you to let us know all the information that needs to appear on the site.
So when we are asked the very popular question, “How long will it take to build this site?”, it’s necessary to keep the schedule of everyone’s tasks in mind. Below is a Gannt chart of the common tasks involved in creating a website:
Gannt charts are a particularly useful form of schedule because you can see everyone’s tasks laid out chronologically with the dependencies evident upon preceding tasks.
You can see in this timeline how the quote can’t be completed until we have done an initial interview and we know what you want in your website. Then you may want ‘x’ number of days to consider our quote before saying “Wow! That’s great. Let’s get started!” Then we will write up a contract of everything we have promised to do for you, and you may want ‘x’ number of days to read over elegantly simple contract before saying “Wow! That’s great. Let’s get started!”
You get the idea. Our schedule is dependent upon your schedule. Our tasks getting completed are dependent upon your tasks being completed. So really, the timeline of a project can expand or contract based upon how quickly you complete your tasks. Some clients are very quick to respond. Some like to take their time. We are OK with either scenario. We’re on your team!
All that being said, we generally find most websites take a couple months to complete. A static HTML site can be up a couple weeks earlier. Sometimes a customized CMS site can take a couple weeks longer. And if you want our basic, uncustomized WordPress site, we can have that up in a matter of days.
But remember: it’s a team effort.
Go Team, go!
